On the GrowZA blog, we work to share insights, innovations, and breakthroughs in community development and social investment. We've been experimenting with the flexon approach and testing its utility within the context of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) to build sustainable social investment vehicles for our clients.
The flexon approach, derived from the principles of adaptive systems in biology, consists of six interconnected elements or "flexons": Redundancy, Diversity, Modularity, Adaptability, Prudence, and Embeddedness. These flexons aim to help organizations become more resilient, adaptive, and successful in an ever-changing landscape.
At the GrowZA ThinkTank, we're exploring the potential of the flexon approach to enhance the impact of community development initiatives, particularly when combined with the ABCD framework. ABCD focuses on leveraging existing community assets, skills, and resources to drive sustainable development. By integrating the flexon approach, we can strengthen the resilience and adaptability of our social investment vehicles, ensuring lasting positive change for the communities we serve.
Here's how GrowZA is testing the flexon approach within the context of ABCD:
Redundancy: We identify and utilize multiple assets within communities, creating a diverse range of projects and initiatives. This redundancy ensures that if one asset or initiative encounters challenges, others can still provide support and drive development.
Diversity: We actively engage diverse stakeholders, including community members, local organizations, and experts from various fields, fostering innovation and collaboration. This diversity helps to ensure that our social investment vehicles are tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of each community.
Modularity: We break down community development initiatives into smaller, manageable projects or phases. This modularity allows us to efficiently allocate resources, address specific issues, and adapt or scale projects according to local needs and available assets.
Adaptability: We continuously evaluate and adjust our initiatives based on feedback and changing circumstances, embracing a culture of learning and improvement. This adaptability ensures that our social investment vehicles remain effective and relevant in a dynamic environment.
Prudence: We carefully assess the potential risks and benefits of each initiative, engaging in evidence-based planning and decision-making. This prudence enables us to minimize negative impacts and maximize the effectiveness of our social investment vehicles.
Embeddedness: We cultivate strong relationships with community members, local organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders, fostering collaboration and shared decision-making. This embeddedness promotes local ownership and long-term sustainability of development efforts.
By integrating the flexon approach with ABCD, we believe that we can create more resilient, adaptive, and effective social investment vehicles for our clients. We're excited to continue testing this innovative methodology and sharing our learnings with you, our valued community.
