Last Minute Plans for Mandela Day: Giving Back in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg

Tell them GrowZA sent you!

Have you left your plans for Mandela Day to the last minute? No need to worry, you're not alone, and there are still plenty of opportunities available to give back to our community, uphold Madiba's legacy, and live his values.

Nelson Mandela International Day, celebrated annually on July 18th, offers an occasion for us to get involved in volunteer and community service. Let's remember Madiba's 67 years of public service and aim to spend at least 67 minutes on this day to make a difference in the world around us.

Here's a roundup of some notable non-profits in Cape Town and Durban you can reach out to.

Cape Town:

The Haven Night Shelter: This non-profit provides temporary shelter, physical care, social welfare, and family reunification services to homeless adults. They're often looking for volunteers and donations.

The Cape Town Society for the Blind: They provide opportunities to empower visually impaired individuals. From teaching life skills to facilitating work experience, they can use all the help they can get.

Durban:

Durban Child & Youth Care Centre: A home for children who have been abandoned, neglected or orphaned, this centre is always in need of people willing to spend time with these children or to offer help in other ways.

Umthombo Street Children: They work to change the way society perceives and treats street children. Your help here can make a significant difference.

Johannesburg:

Afrika Tikkun: This organization focuses on empowering the next generation by providing education, health and social services to young people and their families in South African townships.

Meals on Wheels Community Services: Their mission is to provide meals to those who are unable, due to economic or physical factors, to cater for their nutritional needs. Volunteers can help by delivering meals and providing companionship to the elderly or disabled.

you can also choose to make a donation by SMSing the word MEAL to 39055 (Each SMS is billed at R15, one meal – SA Only)

Door of Hope: They provide a safe and nurturing environment for abandoned babies and children. They always welcome volunteers and donors.

Do keep in mind that the need for volunteers and donations isn't limited to Mandela Day. These organisations need help all year round, and there’s no limit to the positive impact you can make in someone's life.
