Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have become increasingly popular in recent years and have the potential to be a valuable tool for youth development. The GrowZA team has been exploring (with encouraging success) the extent to which UAV programming accelerates interest and engagement in STEM education and provides entry into aviation for underserved community youth, while also contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
STEM education is essential for the development of our future leaders and innovators and aligns with the SDG 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. By exposing youth to STEM subjects, we are encouraging them to develop critical thinking skills and creativity that can be applied to real-world problems. UAV programming is a perfect example of how STEM education can be applied in an engaging and meaningful way.
The field of UAV programming is rapidly growing and provides a range of opportunities for students to learn and explore. For example, programming a UAV to fly a certain path or capture aerial footage requires a solid understanding of math, physics, and computer science. Through UAV programming, students can learn the principles of flight, navigation, and control systems, which are fundamental skills in the field of aviation.
Additionally, UAV programming can provide entry into aviation for rural youth, contributing to the SDG 8, which aims to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
The commercial application of UAV programming is significant, and it has the potential to be a significant job creation vehicle in South Africa. According to a report by the International Civil Aviation Organization, the drone industry is expected to create millions of jobs worldwide in the coming years. UAVs are used in a wide range of industries, including agriculture, construction, film and television, and emergency services, among others. By providing youth with the skills to program UAVs, we are equipping them with valuable skills that can lead to employment opportunities in these growing industries.
We have found that UAV programming is an excellent tool for youth development, particularly for underserved community youth and have built programmes with industry experts which are being field tested as we write this blog. By combining STEM education with hands-on learning, UAV programming offers students the opportunity to explore and develop their skills in a fun and engaging way.
Furthermore, by providing entry into aviation and contributing to the SDGs, UAV programming will open new doors for South African youth, helping them to pursue careers in this growing industry and contribute to a sustainable future.
