Overview

GrowZA in partnership with AECI is proud to introduce the "Strength in Numbers" programme, a comprehensive solution designed to enhance mathematical education in South Africa. This initiative focuses on distributing AECI-branded scientific calculators to schools and providing essential training to teachers in areas where AECI Mining has a presence.

Key Features:

  • Calculator Provision: Supplying schools with AECI-branded scientific calculators.

  • Teacher Training: Offering specialized training for teachers to effectively use these calculators in teaching.

  • Branding and Impact Assessment: Ensuring clear AECI branding on the initiative and assessing the project's impact on the educational landscape.

Background and Need:

  • Ownership and Proficiency Issues: Studies by Fort Hare and Wits University revealed significant gaps in calculator ownership (34% of learners) and proficiency (only 41.9% trained) in the Eastern Cape.

  • Underutilization in Classrooms: A concerning 36.2% reported a lack of calculator usage by teachers, impacting students' performance in Mathematics exams.
